2018 Summoning the Divine Summer Series

Hi everyone.  We're about to begin our "cool" summer with Robert Frost, beloved American poet and 4-time Pulitzer Prize winner.  The readings for Session 1 are attached in Word and PDF; copies are also available in the St. Richard Church Office.  I'll distribute the Frost Session 2 reading packet at the end our first session.    As always, feel free to come even if you don't have time to do the readings.  You'll be able to participate actively in the discussion.

Included in our readings is Frost's narrative poem "Death of a Hired Man."  You might find my summary confusing; below is a link to the complete poem.  It's an easy read.
By the late 1950's, Frost was a poetic rock star-- We've never had another poet with the widespread, national following that Frost enjoyed. The U.S. State Department even sent him as a special envoy to meet with Soviet Premier Khrushchev in Moscow!
  • You’ll appreciate his accessible poetry, his unusual religious faith, and the life difficulties he surmounted.
  • You'll learn that at 40's Frost was a "nobody."  His talented wife Elinor convinced him to sell the farm where they were barely making a living and move to England.  She was certain that the English and Europeans would be more open to his poetry.  She was right!
  • Frost made close, influential friends.  He wandered England, loving its countryside. And, most importantly, an English Press published two of his poetry collections: A Boy's Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914).  Both sold extremely well.  Faced by the possibility of WW 1 and buoyed by the fact that an American publisher had purchased the rights for U.S. publication of both collections, the Frosts returned to America in triumph.
