2018 Summoning the Divine Fall Series

The Spiritual Side of Edgar Allan Poe (1808-1849)

Fall is Harvest time and Halloween--even in our beloved Florida.  Spooks and goblins and mystery.   How appropriate to welcome the mind and art of Edgar Allan Poe! All of us know something about Poe, but you’re in for a surprise. I’ve been fascinated by the misconceptions about Poe, about works by him I didn’t know, and by the breadth and influence of his writing. Poe was huge influence on musical composers (Ravel, Rachmaninoff, and Debussy) and is the creator of detective fiction, science fiction, and the horror-supernatural story.  He wrote love poems and a substantial discussion of God and the universe.

We’ll begin on September 17 (evening) repeated September 18 (morning) with a discussion of Poe’s early life, his most famous poem “The Raven” along with “Annabel Lee” and George William Curtis’ O Listen to the Sounding Sea.”  We’ll also read selections from his “Philosophy of Composition” (linked to “The Raven.”)

Monday evenings 6:30-8 p.m. repeated Tuesday morning 9:30-11 a.m.
Session 2: October 22-23, 2018

In our 2nd session, we'll find that Poe pursues the idea of pervasive eternal love as a defining presence in this life and beyond.  But even more awaits you in the November Poe session during which we'll look at Poe's beliefs about God, the Universe, the soul, and more. The second session reading packet is attached in PDF  as is the announcement for the Poe Fall Series. I’ll have hard copies in the Church office, starting this Sunday, September 9.  I’ll also have them available at Bible Study.  Hope all of you can come....--Pam

Session 3: November 26-27, 2018

The reading packet for our first Poe session will be available in the St. Richard Church Office, beginning this Sunday, September 9. As always, don’t worry if you don’t have time to do any or all of the readings.
